Last night I celebrated becoming 22 with some of the most wonderful people I’ve ever met. Feeling very blessed 😇🥂✨
Even no sea days - due to high swell - were some of my favourite days of my life so far. Exploring the intertidal zone was a breeze when THIS is right outside your bedroom. Damn, I miss walking along this stretch of coastline, searching for invertebrates in the tidal pools and watching for breaching southern right whales. Occasionally we’d have to pick up the odd piece of plastic 😢 and sometimes we’d stumble across a large pile of abalone shells (swipe left) where poachers had shucked them the night before. Everything is in the detail and figuring out the story behind this coastline was one of my hobbies in my spare time here - only 4 months to go until we’re reunited 🇿🇦
Yesterday was #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience - wow that was a mouthful! Here’s a picture of me after my first day of proper marine science in the field taking observational data of great whites in South Africa - look how happy I am!! This experience cemented my admiration and intrigue surrounding elasmobranchs and I’m so happy to say that it’s resulted in me studying whale sharks and white sharks for my two masters dissertations!! There are so many incredible women working in #sharkscience and outreach, who have inspired not only me, but others too with their work 💙 🦈 Want to follow some? I definitely recommend @melissacristinamarquez @nataliekparra @sharkgirlmadison @sharksneedlove @biminisharkgirl @destinygemma @frankieheathsmith Have you got any recommendations for me? ☺️🦈
Just four weeks and three deadlines in the way of me and the Maldives... Honestly, being in the water with whale sharks, absorbing the local culture and getting as much out of the experience as I can is all that’s on my mind right now. I feel pretty useless being sat at home in front of a computer all the time and it’s getting me down... I can’t wait to go and regain my inspiration, so I can come back to York refreshed to give my dissertation my all 💙
Winter has arrived in York ❄️
Was wonderful to have Joanna Pollard from Fairtrade York coming in to give our weekly environmental group a chat about the products she sells and the stories behind them. Fascinating stuff - I bought a beautiful seahorse made from recycled tin by a tribe in the Amazon. I didn’t realise that Yorkshire is a Fairtrade County and York is a Fairtrade city! Fairtrade Fortnight starts on the 25th February ☺️👌🏻
